Very close to the Basque country, just the Ebro river between them, La Rioja is one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain. It´s the smallest one and only 300.000 inhabitants have the honor of being riojanos.
We´re proud of producing the best wine in Spain and one of the best all over the world if we talk about tempranillo.
If that point shouldn’t be important enough, the first time that the spanish language and the basque language were written was in La Rioja, in one of the monasteries deepen in the forests.
It is a land of travellers and exchange, where relationships are formed and culture and customs interchanged.
If you´re a pilgrim, enjoying the Saint James Way, discovering an original and different way of sightseeing in northern Spain, you´ll be in La Rioja. Find out wealth monuments, charming towns and villages, espectacular natural attractions,… and enjoy its gastronomy.
La Rioja cuisine is simple and uses the top quality products found in the region. The popular agricultural tradition of the area provides the cuisine with a great variety of local vegetables and pulses: peppers, garlic, onions, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, chard, borage… What visitor to La Rioja can resist tasting its great stews, made with fava beans or «caparrón» beans. These dishes are unique and use beans which have not been completely dried. As a result, the beans conserve their natural flavour and absorb the flavour of the quail or spicy sausage with which they are cooked.
If you prefer the most sophisticated food, you should not ignore that La Rioja is the region of Spain with the most Michelin stars per inhabitant.
