Surprise in the solitude of the cloister

In response  to the weekly Daily Post challenge:  Surprise

I don´t know if it’s the same for you, but when I visit a monastery where there are cloistered monks or nuns I always feel an enormous curiosity about what will be on the other side of the gate.

One imagines thousands of stories that have transpired intramural over the centuries, wrenching lives, murders, endless joys, eternal sufferings …

But they are only trips of the imagination, that probably never happened and that will be forgotten when leaving the convent.

However, this time something surprising happened. Just after taking this picture, a tiny nun, looking like just arrived from another century, from another life, from another world, … appeared on the other side of the gate.

It should not be more than 1.55 meters, stooped, probably with the vertebrae crushed by the years. With many wrinkles, but with a clean, immaculate skin.

He stopped for a moment, turned to us, smiled, and continued on his way until he was lost by one of the doors.

Surprise from another world?

Relax flying over San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a nice town in La Rioja, Spain.

Flying over San Vicente

The fountain of the church in Ezcaray. Just a detail of a universe.

Ezcaray is the largest town in area in the Upper Oja Valley, set at an altitude of 813 meters, in an environment of peace and quite.

Ezcaray is located in the west area of La Rioja, where I live. Surrounded by mountains, woods and abundant water,

This town of less than 2000 inhabitants is a place to discover, a place to admire and feel, a place where to move practicing numerous sports (the ski resort of Valdezcaray is only a few kilometers), where to taste the best of the traditional and avant-garde gastronomy (The Echaurren restaurant has a Michelin star), where to enjoy relaxing or meeting.

It has been a reference in the textile sector for centuries (The Hijos de Cecilio Valgañón S.L. business is the continuation and legacy passed down by Cecilio Valgañón, who in around the year 1930 switched from making cloths on manually operated looms to making shawls, scarves, sashes and blankets.).

Do you still need more to visit Ezcaray?

It´´s only 14 km from Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the most important points of the Camino de Santiago, the medieval pilgrim route stretching from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, where tradition has it that the body of Saint James the Apostle (Spain’s patron saint) is buried.

Still more?

Haro, the wine capital of Rioja, with its centuries-old wineries, its “chiquiteo area” (drinking one cup of wine from bar to bar), its museum of contemporary art … is just 35 kilometers along a  good road. The highway connects Haro with Logroño, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Barcelona, …

The resources of the area have made its economic development possible for hundreds of years, despite being a bit out of the way, but at the same time so close…

If you have the opportunity, don´t miss it.
