The quadrature of the circle

In Aikido, a harmonic way of martial arts, we say: “To change the angularity to roundness…” We will become more soft. In architecture also we can find examples where angled elements build a composition to rounded expression, look: And in movement: […]

A welcoming glow

Tucked away in a little side street near Piazza di Santa Croce, Florence, we found this little shop full of all things Pinocchio. I vaguely knew that the little character was Italian, but it seems that Geppetto the woodcarver created him in a village near Florence. Doesn’t the shop have a lovely glow?

Is there enough time?

I didn’t have my boots. But luckily I didn’t need them this time. There was no aqua alta. No water came up onto the streets, squares and court yards like I had witnessed when I visited Venice a few years ago for work. However, major flooding, covering almost 15% of the city, now occurs about four […]

The stone scale

In response to this week’s WPC: Scale I took this photo during my Stonehenge Tour in England and although not the most striking post ever, I thought placing the stone between my forefinger and thumb changes the perspective and the mystery this huge magnificent stone circle is known for. ©jodiepages 2017. On a Grand Scale

St. Francis of Assisi called this church his little portion. A large basilica has since been built around it. Funny, I never felt closer to eternity than in the small one–a church of the grandest Scale.

The measurement scale in La Rioja

In response of the weekly challenge Scale.

Imagine a small state in the north of Spain.

Imagine that its name bears the name of the wine it produces.

Imagine that your main asset, almost unique, is that wine.

Imagine that its gastronomy, its culture, the art that is born of its artists is related to the wine.

Imagine that the day to day of its people revolves around wine. The wines before going to eat, the wines before going to dinner. The wine we will take at lunch or dinner….

Imagine that the weather forecasts should be the right ones at any time of the year for the vineyard to grow, mature or reach its fullness.

Imagine all that and more and you will understand that the scale in La Rioja, where I live, is the vineyard and the wine.
I see you have understood.

SO MANY PEDESTRIANS, SO LITTLE TIME.

PHOTO CHALLENGE: THE PEDESTRIAN Garry had a bumper sticker on his old red Mustang convertible that said: “So many pedestrians, so little time.” Cruel? Only if you weren’t trying to drive cross-town in Boston where pedestrians pay no attention to signs, crosswalks, or even oncoming trucks and cars. If they feel like crossing the street, […]
